Why I Started cmdNexus (and Why You Might Care)

I taught myself how to make websites in the mid-90s. I was about 10, armed with Notepad, a dial-up connection, and exactly zero clue what I was doing. Later I learned Flash to post animations on Newgrounds. The animations were awful. But the point was, I liked figuring out how things worked.

That instinct stuck.

Since then, I’ve worn a lot of hats in IT. I’ve worked for some of the biggest names in the industry, doing everything from service desk grunt work to enterprise architecture and systems integration. Over time, I leaned heavily into scripting and automation. Mostly because I hate doing the same task twice, and writing good tools is cheaper than hiring more people.

Which brings us here.

I started cmdNexus to create the kind of resource I always wished existed. No fluff. No bloated walkthroughs written by someone who clearly never ran the script they’re sharing. Just real-world tools, methods, and insights that save time and prevent gray hair.

I want to explore the real side of automation. The weird edge cases. The shortcuts that actually work. The things you only learn by doing. If I can share something useful, start a few conversations, or help someone level up without putting them to sleep, I’ll call that a win. And let’s be honest, I’ll probably learn a thing or two along the way too.

I hope you stick around and learn with me.

So What Can You Expect From cmdNexus?

Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing a mix of scripting content. From beginner basics to advanced tools. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to sharpen your edge, there should be something here worth your time.

PowerShell Bootstraps (Beginner Series)

This kicks things off. Fast, useful one-liners you can tweak and use right away. No drawn out theory. Just practical stuff like:

  • The one-liners I use constantly
  • Finding AD users without a migraine
  • Killing processes cleanly and quickly

Scripting Muscle (Intermediate Series)

Next comes the part where we stop copy pasting and start scripting with intent. We’ll dive into variables, arrays, loops, objects, and pipeline work. The goal is confidence. Knowing how to build scripts that do more than just run once.

Toolmaking and Deployment (Advanced Series)

Later, I’ll roll out some deeper content focused on real world tool building. Think Windows Forms, scheduled tasks, GPO based deployment, and beyond.

AI and Automation

I’ll also be writing about where AI fits into the workflow. Some of it is helpful. Some of it is nonsense. We’ll cover both. Topics like:

  • How I use AI to speed up scripting
  • Prompt crafting for sysadmins
  • Why you still need to think for yourself

Offbeat and Useful

Every so often, I’ll post something a little different. Weird little scripts. Experiments. Thoughts on trends or tools. The stuff that doesn’t always have a clean label but is worth sharing anyway.

I would also love to hear back from you! What content would you love to see here?
